Manchester United legend Jaap Stam believes that the Red Devils must be more like Chelsea if they are to win the Premier League title, reports the Daily Mirror.

The Red Devils are currently fourth in the top flight and sit sixteen points behind the already-crowned champions.

While United have stuck to their principles of bright, progressive attacking football, Chelsea have been accused of playing unattractive football in order to eke out results over the latter part of the season.

However, Stam thinks that United need to learn from Jose Mourinho’s side and defend better then they have done this season. They have only conceded 36 goals in the 36 games so far this season in the league, but that has largely been down to the fine work of goalkeeper David De Gea, who has worked wonders behind an underwhelming defence.

The former centre-back is perhaps the kind of signing that his compatriot van Gaal needs in the heart of his defence.

He continued: “Maybe defend a bit better. You know Chelsea, they’re not playing the most attacking way of football, but they get results, and that’s what you need as a team. Every manager has got their own way of playing, their own style, and Mourinho has chosen this typical way of playing, and they get results.

“That’s good for the team, but for the players as well, if you can get results and win the league. So if they [United] defend a bit better and keep playing attacking football, and you don’t give that many goals or chances away, then eventually you’ll get your results and win the league as well.”
