Manchester United’s quest to sign Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne this summer appears to be over after reports in the Mirror Online suggest that the England international is ready to commit his future to the Saints.

The Red Devils were thought to be closing on a deal for the right-back as they look to strengthen their squad for next season ahead of their return to the Champions League and the Metro claimed last week that they were in advanced talks after making an £18million bid for the Saints star.

But it appears that United boss Louis van Gaal will have to turn his attentions elsewhere as Clyne looks set to sign a contract extension at St Mary’s, thus ending speculation in regards to his future.

The news will come as a bitter blow for United as they are in desperate need to sign a natural right-back this summer, as Antonio Valencia has been forced to play out of position for much of the campaign, while last season’s first choice Rafael is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.
