Xabi Alonso move opens the door for Andrea Pirlo to join Liverpool

In what is fast becoming a merry-go-round of veteran midfielders, it appears as if Xabi Alonso could leave Bayern Munich this summer in order to join Juventus. Such a switch would, in turn, open the door for Andrea Pirlo to join Liverpool as a replacement for Steven Gerrard.

According to the Daily Express, the Champions League finalists are extremely keen on former Liverpool man Alonso, for whom Serie A is now the only ‘major league’ missing off his resume – having played in Spain, England and Germany.

The Express believe that Munich are ready to part ways with Alonso, 33, after just one season, despite him playing 38 times for them in all competitions this season, scoring four times. Juventus have no such qualms over the player and are desperate to seek out an experienced playmaker to support the likes of Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba.

Supposedly, Brendan Rodgers is already in talks with Pirlo over a lucrative short-term deal and it’s believed the move could happen if the Turin-based side win the Champions League this season, as the veteran would have nothing left to achieve with his current side.

The 35-year-old Italian is open to a final move before he retires and would be warmly welcomed on Merseyside. He would replace Steven Gerrard, who joins LA Galaxy at the end of the season after 17 years at Anfield.
