The England international apparently prefers a move to London, even though the Citizens have put together a £45 million player-plus-cash deal for the youngster. The Sky Blues are willing to offer £30 million and Stevan Jovetic for the 20-year-old, who would help them satisfy home-grown player quotas ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

However, the forward grew up in the capital and is thought to want to return there now that he has the opportunity, with Arsenal and Chelsea both interested.

Manager Brendan Rodgers may prefer him to go to the Etihad Stadium, considering how lucrative their potential offer might be. The Northern Irishman could then use the Sterling windfall to improve his squad and replace the departed superstar.

In 47 appearances for the Merseyside club this campaign the want-away star has scored eight goals and created another eight for his teammates.

These stats do not directly demonstrate why the youngster merits such an outlay from City, but teams are also paying for his undoubted potential. The player won the European Golden Boy for the best U21 player on the continent this season.
