The Red Devils have already completed their  first piece of business by agreeing the transfer of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven, but are sure to dip into the market again before next season. They spent over £150 million on new signings last summer, and may look to spend a similar amount this summer as they look to challenge for the Premier League title.

However, United will also need to make sure that they don’t lose any key players as well.

Goalkeeper David De Gea has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and has just over a year left on his contract. As one of the best performers in the current campaign it would be a massive loss to Van Gaal were the 24-year-old to leave.

The fact that United are setting themselves an ultimatum demonstrates that the 63-year-old is keen to get his squad together early in pre-season. This could be important to allow the team to gel before a tilt at the league title during the next campaign.
