The England international has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer after reports that he will not sign a new deal with the club, who have slapped a huge £60million price-tag on the winger in an attempt to fend off any interest from leading clubs in Europe.

With the whole week dominated about Sterling’s future it appears manager Brendan Rodgers has decided to take him out of the firing line by omitting him from the squad to face the Potters.

The Reds head into the fixture at the Britannia Stadium knowing they will secure a top-six finish and Europa League football next season if they match the results of either Tottenham or Southampton, who are both away at Everton and Manchester City respectively on Sunday afternoon.

It will also be the final game in a Liverpool shirt for legendary captain Steven Gerrard but this emotional occasion for Kop supporters has been somewhat overshadowed by the Sterling situation.
