The Italian international’s representative has been quoted as saying his client will remain at Anfield after this difficult season, in which he has only scored one Premier League goal since his £16m move from AC Milan last year.

However, Liverpool seem to have other plans and want to make some major changes up front after signings Balotelli and Rickie Lambert struggled to adequately replace last summer’s departing star Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan international left for Barcelona after scoring 31 goals in the Premier League, and there’s no doubt new quality is needed in attack to get the Reds back among the main title contenders.

According to the Guardian, the sale of Balotelli could be the start of the process to improve Brendan Rodgers’ squad for a renewed challenge next season.
