Arsene Wenger masterminded the end of a nine year trophy drought with a remarkable comeback victory over Hull City in 2014 – but it was far from easy.
The Gunners had shot themselves in the foot with the concession of two goals in the opening ten minutes, but Aaron Ramsey’s impressive strike helped the team triumph 3-2 in extra time.
Aston Villa are a better team than Hull City last season, but suffered a crisis of confidence in the first half of the campaign under Paul Lambert. The Midlands outfit have enjoyed a real resurgence in recent months, with Tim Sherwood inspiring a climb up the table with some positive football.
Sherwood was renowned for discussing his own win percentage at Tottenham Hotspur, and it would be hard to begrudge him doing the same at Villa Park – he’s achieved victory in 50% of his matches as Aston Villa manager – the best of any in the club’s long history (albeit with a rather limited sample size of 12 games).
Arsenal remain favourites – with players of the calibre of Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez they have to be – but Aston Villa have their own gem in Jack Grealish, and Christian Benteke has returned to form.
Of course, the famous magic of the cup means anyone could win this.
