The Red Devils have been following the Argentina international for over a year, but the could still be beaten to his signature by their Merseyside rivals. Manager Louis van Gaal is yet to make a firm bid for the midfielder, who has a £25 million release clause according to the Mirror.

The 27-year-old has made 32 appearances for Benfica this season and scored four goals, helping them to win the Primeira Liga ahead of fierce rivals and Champions League quarter finalists Porto. The nine time internationally capped star could take a place on the wings for the Anfield outfit, a position they have been weak in this season.

Although more worryingly for Liverpool fans Gaitan could be a good replacement for contract rebel Raheem Sterling. Both largely play on the wing and are known for their pace as well as creative abilities. Could this move be the manager Brendan Rodgers planning for a life without his want-away star?
