The England skipper was handed the armband by new manager Louis van Gaal at the start of the season, but failed to prevent United from finishing a second successive season without any silverware.

A heavy shock 4-0 defeat by League One outfit Milton Keynes Dons last August ended hopes of success in the Capital One Cup, then a quarter-final home defeat by Arsenal killed any dreams of lifting the FA Cup for the first time since 2004.

With the Red Devils never really considered genuine challengers for the Premier League title, the only cause for celebration was achieving their target of qualifying for the Champions League with two games to spare.

Much will be expected from United next season and Rooney’s aim is to lift a trophy for the first time as club captain:

“Next season the focus will be on winning some silverware and I hope I can lead the team to doing that.” he told the club’s official website.

“I think we have to try and win whatever competition that we’re in. That’s what we always try to do. It’s important that we push on and try to win whatever we’re involved in.”
