Metro Sport claimed on Wednesday that the Red Devils had agreed a £21.2million fee with the Primeira Liga champions and were set to complete a deal for the 27-year-old as early as next week, after Portuguese journalist Goncalo Lopes took to Twitter to break the news.

However, it appears the rumours are untrue as United boss van Gaal wants to strengthen other areas of his playing squad at Old Trafford and holds not interest in the Argentina international.

United do seem well stocked in the wide positions ahead of next season and will be further boosted by the arrival of young Dutchman Memphis Depay, who is likely to occupy the left-wing position.

In addition to Depay, the likes of Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj will all compete for a two starting berths on either wing, which would make a move for Gaitan unnecessary unless van Gaal is planning to offload one of his wingers.
