The Gunners boss is said to be a huge admirer of the Real Madrid man and hopes a huge offer in the summer will tempt Los Blancos into selling the forward, despite him being contracted at the club until 2019.

Goal.com football journalist Greg Stobart informed ArsenalFanTV over the weekend that Wenger would like to bring his compatriot to the Emirates next season but admits the deal looks unlikely.

Signing Benzema would certainly prove that the Gunners mean business in the transfer window as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

Arsenal’s current strikers Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud have done well at times during the season but the North Londoners surely need the extra firepower in order to end their 11-year wait for a league championship.

Benzema, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United [via Mirror Sport], scored 15 league goals in a disappointing season for Madrid as they ended the campaign without any silverware.

And with rumours that his club are preparing a swoop for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero in the summer [via Metro Sport], the Frenchman could find himself surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu in the near future.
