The Gunners are keen to strengthen defensively ahead of next season, and Arsene Wenger has been suitably impressed by the performances of Soares in the Portuguese top flight.

According to the Daily Star, this could see Arsenal make a move for the player imminently, with the 23-year-old one of the club’s top targets and possibily available this summer.

Arsenal may already have Mathieu Debuchy, Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers as options in that part of the pitch, but it looks like Wenger wants more depth after Frenchman Debuchy spent the vast majority of this season out injured.

This is not the first time Arsenal have been linked with a Sporting Lisbon player, with midfield starlet William Carvalho also known to be one of the names on the club’s shortlist this summer.
