The Gunners have been linked with the Argentine goal-getter in the past, with Arsene Wenger known to have spoken to the player when he was still at Real Madrid, prior to his deciding to move to Naples instead.

Higuain looks an ideal signing for Arsenal up front, with Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck struggling to impress in that position on a consistent basis this season.

Still, £40m may prove too much for the north London giants to pay, with that fee coming close to the club-record deal paid for Mesut Ozil in the summer of 2013.

According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal are jut one of a number of clubs pursuing the 27-year-old, who contributed 28 goals and 10 assists to Napoli’s cause this season.

With stats like that, it’s easy to see why Arsenal are interested, with Giroud only managing 18 goals all season long.
