Blatter, who was only re-elected on Friday, announced his decision to step down from his role as the head of FIFA during a shock press conference on Tuesday night and now it appears the pending investigation could have been the cause of his sudden departure.

BBC World News have reported that US officials are set to step up their inquiries into the corruption allegations and are hoping to gain the co-operation of some of the FIFA figures in order to build a case against Blatter.

It was just last week when the football world was shocked to hear of news that FIFA executives had been arrested over claims of alleged bribery, which has reportedly been going on for the best part of two decades.
