Spanish newspaper AS claim that the Los Blancos president has labelled Aguero as the player he believes is capable of returning excitement to the Santiago Bernabeu following a trophy-less season – filled with whistles and catcalls from the Real supporters – that cost Carlo Ancelotti his job.

Rafael Benitez, who is set to be unveiled as the new Madrid boss as early as Wednesday this week [The Guardian], could therefore make the 27-year-old forward his first signing.

The Citizens striker netted 26 goals this season – five more than Tottenham Hotspur’s in form Harry Kane – and Real want the Golden Boot winner to line up in attack between Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema’s future with the Spanish giants is uncertain, with reports linking the Frenchman to Liverpool [The Guardian], and the La Liga outfit will therefore need a replacement if he leaves.

Aguero spent five campaigns in Spain with Atletico Madrid before sealing a £38m transfer to the Etihad Stadium in 2011. He has helped fire City to two Premier League titles, with his goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011-12 season – that sealed their first top flight trophy  – forever etching his name in the Sky Blues’ history books.
