The German was out on loan at Inter Milan for the second half of the season, but didn’t have the most successful time of it at the San Siro. He only managed one goal in 18 appearances, and was only trusted to start ten of those games. As a result it is unlikely that the Nerazzurri will be trying to bring the World Cup winner back to the club permanently any time soon.

It had been thought that the 30-year-old had an option with the Super Lig champions, but it has now been revealed by Gala manager Hamza Hamzaoglu that they aren’t interested in the forward.

He said: “Podolski is not on our radar right now, he was in the winter but not right now.”

Werder Bremen general manager Thomas Eichin also said: “Lukas Podolski is a great footballer, I like him. But we do not need to discuss such rumours. It is totally unrealistic for us to make a move for him.”

The Gunners are now likely to be searching for somewhere else to offload Podolski, with intense competition for the forward positions already at the Emirates. Alexis Sanchez has the left wing position tied down, while Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott are already both fighting over the central striker role.
