The Spain international has struggled for game time this season, managing just 19 starts in all competitions. Many of these were due to injuries sustained by usual first choice right-back Dani Carvajal. At 32-years-old the defender isn’t getting any younger either, so will need to move if he wants to play regularly again at the highest level.

Meanwhile his former side are on the lookout for a new full-back after the departure of Glen Johnson. The England international was their regular right-back when fit, and the added blow of Jon Flanagan suffering another injury means that a new player in the position is vital.

Arbeloa could be a good fit, having featured at Anfield before. He played 98 times in three seasons for the Merseyside club before joining Los Blancos in 2009. In his final season he helped then manager Rafa Benitez’s side to finish second in the Premier League, and it could be the same boss who now sends him back.
