During last weekend’s match with Columbus Crew, several chants including the word “retard” and other offensive phrases were clearly heard emanating from all corners of the stadium.

It is understood that the main perpetrators were the Iron Lion Firm, a supporter group officially approved by the team back in 2011. They have been warned for a similar thing in the past.

“The r-word for individuals with intellectual disabilities is the equivalent to the n-word,” said Amy Van Bergen, executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida. “It is that offensive. It is that degrading.”

The group responded on Facebook, saying that they didn’t condone such actions and that they thought they their lyrics had been misunderstood. Instead of saying “retarded”, they claim they were actually saying “disregarded”.
