The recently crowned Europa League champions are looking to reinforce their side ahead of an assault on the Champions League next season, and have earmarked the out of favour Mexican as the ideal addition.

It had previously been thought that he might join Porto, with the Madrid supposedly wanting to ensure they grabbed superstar Jackson Martinez in return – but that rumour now appears to be losing traction.

Raul Jimenez only joined Atletico Madrid from Club America last summer after the World Cup, but he has struggled to make an impact in Spanish football.

Last month Madrid manager Simeone told Mexico national boss Herrera that he still had Jimenez in his plans, but he now looks like he has changed his mind.
