The Netherlands international will be needing first team football next season if he is going to make sure of a place in his nation’s squad for Euro 2016. Last season with the Red Devils he played 29 times despite an ankle injury that kept him out for six weeks, with the vast majority of those games being starts. However, with new recruits expected at Old Trafford the 31-year-old may not have the same opportunities next time round.

The striker has even been in touch with Bianconeri player and former teammate Patrice Evra to see how the Italian side work.

He said: “I’m still in touch with Patrice Evra and he tells me about the way they work. It’s very different to the Dutch and English approach but it obviously pays off.”

This deal will hinge on whether United are able to sign either Napoli star Gonzalo Higuain or PSG ace Edinson Cavani. With Wayne Rooney and young James Wilson the only other centre-forwards in the squad after Radamel Falcao’s loan ended manager Louis van Gaal is in dire need of strengthening the position.
