The 24 year old has been in fine form over the past 18 months and wishes to move back to his hometown, leaving Man United in something of a pickle.

De Gea has just a year to run on his current contract and as such his value is diminishing rapidly.

Should Man United elect to not sell the player this summer then they face the likelihood of seeing the £18m they spent on the custodian vanishing, De Gea able to then leave the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2016.

This source cites Louis van Gaal’s interest in Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas as a potential factor, with a swap deal perhaps in the offing, and it looks entirely plausible that the Premier League side will see yet another top talent leave the club for a move to the Spanish giants.

The likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have followed a similar path to the one De Gea may well take this summer.
