Brendan Rodgers is keen on landing 21 year old Croatian midfielder Kovacic though by all accounts San Siro boss Roberto Mancini is looking to keep hold of the former Dinamo Zagreb man.

Previous attempts to lure Kovacic were met by the Italian side’s demands for more than the £15m offered by Liverpool, this has led to the Premier League side’s willingness to offer Fabio Borini as a makeweight in a player plus cash offer.

Borini has proven something of a flop since moving to Anfield, managing just three goals in 38 appearances for the club, though the former AS Roma man did succeed during his loan spell at Sunderland.

Kovacic could be seen as a sensible replacement for Steven Gerrard and the fact that Mancini’s side failed to secure a Champions League berth could lead to a possible exit, though of course Liverpool also failed in their bid for qualification to Europe’s showpiece tournament.
