The 26-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell with Southampton last season and is eyeing a return to the Barclays Premier League this summer:

“The only thing I can say is that I’m happy in England,” he began, “I had a fantastic season, so you would not punish me to go back.”

Chelsea along with Tottenham Hotspur have been credited with a interest in the Atletico Madrid defender [via Telegraph Sport] in recent weeks as both English sides look to strengthen their defence ahead of next season.

The Blues are thought to want to add another centre-half to provide competition for ageing captain John Terry who, despite his stellar performances in their title-winning season, will be 35 later this year and can’t continue at the top level for too much longer.

Meanwhile Spurs’ troubles in defence have been well-documented with the likes of Federico Fazio and Vlad Chiriches both failing to impress and a move for Alderweireld would reunite him with international team-mate Jan Vertonghen.

Alderweireld is a versatile operator; as well as featuring in the heart of the defence, he can also impress as a right-back. He began his career as a youngster in his homeland with Germinal Beerschot before moving to Ajax in 2008. He won three Dutch titles with the Amsterdam giants before becoming a Spanish champion under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid.
