Chelsea transfer target insists he can still be great despite poor spell at Manchester United

The Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford has been the subject of intense speculation since the end of the season as he only started one league game upon returning to full fitness towards the end of the campaign.

He has failed to live up to the heights of his stunning debut season at United when he bagged 30 goals in all competition en route to winning his first Premier League medal.

The former Arsenal man has struggled with injuries in the last two seasons, and despite scoring 10 league goals last year, van Gaal has been tipped to bring in a new striker in the summer and that could spell the end for van Persie.

Edinson Cavani [via Express Sport], Karim Benzema [via Daily Star Sport] and Harry Kane [via Sky Sports] are all rumoured to be targets for the Red Devils, however, van Persie insists he still has a lot to offer and wants to continue playing in to his 40’s:

“Am I worried?” said van Persie. “No, I’m totally relaxed. I have a contract with this club until 2016.”

“Things could change now, but that all depends on Manchester United not me. Believe me, I’m relaxed – I’m not going to be part of a puppet show.

“In August I’m 32. But I still have the ambition to play for another eight years,” van Persie added.

His latest comments come in contrast to a recent interview given to reporters in Holland, as reported by ESPN.

“It’s a strange, difficult situation,” he began, speaking back at the beginning of June.

“A new situation, that’s a better word. I have to think in a realistic way. It’s my ambition to play the next years. I’m thinking about my family and my children with every decision I take.

“These are very important for me. I’m a real family guy. I think it’s fantastic to see how happy my children and wife are. That’s something I take into consideration when I’m thinking about my future.”
