Manchester United are reportedly close to signing Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic in a £36m deal this summer, according to former Croatia midfielder Milan Rapaic.

The 29-year-old is being tipped to leave the Vincente Calderon after just one season, having failed to fully impress manager Diego Simeone, despite scoring 20 goals.

Mandzukic has also shown himself to be a fine player at previous club Bayern Munich, where he won the treble in the 2012/13 season, scoring in the Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund.

According to the Metro, United are leading the chase for the Croatian international’s signature, wit the Red Devils keen to link up with the experienced centre-forward to replace Radamel Falcao and provide an upgrade on the off-form Robin van Persie.

“It appears to me that he’s very close to Manchester United,” Rapaic told Italian souce Gazzetta dello Sport when asked about his fellow countryman’s future.
