Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are among the Premier League clubs chasing Charlton Athletic youngster Joe Gomez in this summer’s transfer window, according to the Daily Express.

The versatile 18-year-old is a highly regarded talent who has caught the eye in the Championship in recent times, making 21 league appearances for the Addicks in the 2014/15 season. The Express claims Charlton could now be ready to cash-in on the player, as they hope for a fee of around £8m plus potential add-ons in the future.

Able to play at centre-back or right-back, Gomez is the latest promising young talent to emerge from the youth team at Charlton, with Arsenal notably signing Carl Jenkinson from the London outfit back in the summer of 2011, while Liverpool have also raided the club in the past to bring Jonjo Shelvey to Anfield.

Gomez is another who looks ready to embark upon a career in the Premier League, with both Arsenal and Liverpool well known for handing opportunities to young players to impress in their first-teams.

With Liverpool particularly keen to land some new defensive players, it makes sense that Brendan Rodgers could be looking at the England Under-19 international, though the Express state that he is likely to be initially loaned back to Charlton instead of being brought into the Reds’ first-team squad straight away.

Liverpool have already signed James Milner and Adam Bodgan this summer, but fans may feel Rodgers needs to be aiming a little higher in the transfer market after seeing the team slip out of the top four this season, with many of last year’s signings not doing the business on Merseyside, such as Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren.
