It was rumoured that a £16.6m deal was already in place to take the 21-year-old from the San Siro to Anfield, but this has put the brakes on that. Even so, a transfer could still go ahead if the Reds go in for the Croatia international.

While on international duty, the youngster said: “For now I’m still happy in Italy, but we’ll see about the future. Now I’m thinking about my holidays. I only know that I’m due back at Appiano Gentile on July 5.

“That’s why I haven’t heard anyone from the club yet. There’s no need for us to talk, I recently renewed my contract. I’m not expecting any further notifications, but of course you never know with the transfer market.”

He made 42 appearances for Nerazzurri last season, scoring five goals and creating another three for his teammates. As well as this the former Dinamo Zagreb man has several similarities with departing Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard in his game. As such he could be the perfect replacement for the departing legend.

Both players can play in deep lying and more advanced roles in central midfield, and the duo also excel at long shots and passing. With the Merseyside club looking to enhance their squad after a disappointing campaign in which they finished sixth in the Premier League he could be perfect addition for manager Brendan Rodgers.
