Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is interested in the German international and the departure of Jurgen Klopp, and the Westfalenstadion side’s poor campaign in 2014/15, could aid their push to sign the 26-year-old.

Pochettino used youngster Nabil Bentaleb and club product Ryan Mason as his chief midfield options in his first season in charge of Tottenham, and Bender arguably offers a stronger option than the Spurs pair.

Bender helped Dortmund to two domestic titles in his first three seasons following his move to the club from 1860 Munich and has since seen the club fall a country mile behind rivals Bayern Munich in the race for the German title.

The Daily Mail claim Bender would cost around £20 million, and that reflects a fair price for an experienced talent such as the Dortmund man. Pochettino will look to defeat Southampton in a race to lure the player to the English top tier, with the Saints also rumoured to be keen on the midfielder according to the English tabloid.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy saw the huge sum accrued from the sale of Gareth Bale in 2013 spent on a number of additions who have failed to impress-Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado being two prime examples-and as such, one wonders how freely the North London side will spend this summer.

A move to Tottenham could aid Bender’s push for a more prominent role in Joachim Low’s national team set-up.
