Newcastle United narrowly avoided relegation in 2014/15 and McClaren has identified a lack of a killer instinct in the final third a key reason for their failures.

Indeed Newcastle United netted just eight goals in their final 11 Premier League fixtures last season and McClaren hopes to tempt Deeney into leave Vicarage Road.

Watford have secured promotion to the Premier League but Deeney may nonetheless be interested in a high-profile move to St James’ Park and this source claims it would take a fee in excess of £10m to land the 26 year old.

Deeney netted 20+ goals in each of his past three seasons at Watford but has had no experience of life in the English top tier and as such any move for the former Walsall man could prove something of a risk.
