Done Deal: Liverpool complete signing of highly-rated England youth international

Joe Gomez has become Liverpool’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, after the club announced the deal via their official Twitter account on Saturday.

The England under-19 international has put pen-to-paper on a long-term deal with the Merseyside outfit and will join James Milner, Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan as the club’s new signings so far.

The teenage defender impressed after breaking into the Championship side’s first-team during the 2014/15 campaign. He made 24 appearances for the Addicks last term, and also won caps at England Under 19 level.

Liverpool are said to have beaten Arsenal and Manchester United [via talkSPORT] to the signing of the highly-rated youngster and it remains to be seen whether he will be a part of the first-team picture next season.

Gomez’s £3.5 million release clause was triggered earlier in the week by the Reds and the 18-year-old has passed a medical and agreed personal terms to become the latest addition in what is expected to be a busy transfer window for manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman is understood to be targeting more recruits as he looks to challenge for Champions League qualification next season and has been linked with a move for Hoffenheim star Roberto Firmino, who is a reported target for Manchester United [via Mirror Sport].

It remains to be seen whether Rodgers will also look to recruit more defensive cover this summer. First-choice right-back Glen Johnson has left the club on a free transfer, while doubts remain about Martin Skrtel’s future. The Slovak centre-back confirmed that he has not signed a new contract with the club, despite reports to the contrary [Express].
