Currently impressing at the Under 21’s European Championships for Portugal, the 23-year-old has also been playing well for his club over the past couple of seasons. He was even selected for the senior World Cup squad last summer, and looks perfectly suited for the Premier League with his physical attributes.

The Gunners have already made a £28.5 million offer for the midfielder, and that could rise to £37 million with add ons if he is successful at the Emirates. However, with the Red Devils now involved in the situation it could mean that Sporting try and play them off against each other to try and raise the price.

The North Londoners could use the centre-mid as a partner for Francis Coquelin in the middle of the park. Although both are defensively minded, against some teams that will likely be needed, and Carvalho could be an improvement on the Frenchman when only one is required.

However, the Red Devils are also in need of a new centre-mid. With Michael Carrick now 33-years-old and the extra games from qualifying for the Champions League manager Louis van Gaal will need to bolster the position. Carvalho could be the perfect man to do so.
