The four players the 63-year-old is targeting are Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen, Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, and either his teammate Karim Benzema or Tottenham’s Harry Kane. If successful this would give the Red Devils an entirely new spine for the next campaign.

Louis van Gaal spent big last summer, and looks set to do so again as he aims to compete on an extra front next season after qualifying for the Champions League. The Dutchman will also have higher expectations to deal with in the Premier League after fans were happy with a fourth place finish last time round.

Cillessen would be a replacement for David De Gea, who is set to to leave for the Bernabeu according to the Mirror. The 26-year-old was van Gaal’s number one while he was in charge of the Netherlands national team so is obviously trusted by the former Barcelona boss.

Meanwhile Ramos could add both experience and class to a shaky back line, and Schweinsteiger would bring top quality to the midfield. Both have won everything they possibly could in the game and can help the team to challenge for the Premier League title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

Up top the Dutchman wants to try and sign another proven talent in Benzema, or Kane, who scored an amazing 32 goals in a brilliant breakthrough campaign last time round. If he gets either striker then it will be Robin van Persie who may have to leave Old Trafford.
