The Catalan side are interested in the 27-year-old despite having just won the treble with an incredibly impressive front line of Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suarez. Moreover, the winger is coming off the back of a less-than-impressive season with the Red Devils. He managed ten assists and four goals in 32 games, but netted three of the goals and created four of the assists in his first six matches.

In the latter stages of the campaign the former Real Madrid man was even dropped from the starting XI for the formerly maligned Ashley Young. However, this hasn’t put off Barca, who are apparently see the Argentina international as a potential summer reinforcement.

Should Barcelona bring the winger back to Spain, it would represent an audacious bit of business, with the winger only having left their fierce La Liga rivals a year ago.

SPORT believe the player is keen on a return to La Liga, but this would contradict recent comments made by the player; just this month Di Maria claimed that he will still be at Old Trafford next season, according to Sky Sports. It remains to be seen whether the player would be open to a move back to Spain so soon after leaving La Liga behind.

He said: “I have just finished my first season playing for Manchester United. It was a hard season for me. I think it was hard because it was another country and another league, and this league is harder than the Spanish one. So, I couldn’t adapt myself as I wanted to.

“Now I will play the Copa America and then I will move back to Manchester for next season and do my best there.”

This transfer is unlikely to move any further forward while Di Maria is with his national team at the Copa America. Next up, the Albiceleste face Colombia in the quarter-finals and they could be in the competition until July 4 if they go all the way to the final.

Another option for Di Maria may be Bayern Munich, with Bild [via the Metro] reporting that the Bavarian giants are keen to use United’s interest in Bastian Schweinsteiger as leverage to secure the former Real Madrid man.
