The 24 year old England international has previously been the subject of a £10m bid from the Anfield outfit, who look set to snap up the former Crystal Palace man in a £12.5m deal.

£10.5m of the fee would be up front with a further £2m potentially earned on top of that sum.

Clyne would presumably act as a replacement for Glen Johnson and would helpfully improve Brendan Rodgers defence as Liverpool seek to put last season’s nightmare behind them.

The great form shown by Clyne last term earned the Saints star a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England national team set-up and one imagines a high-profile move to Liverpool can only help in his push for a prominent role at international level.

Liverpool have already completed the signings of James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino.
