Chelsea, West Ham and Southampton are also keen on the QPR striker who netted 18 Premier League goals last term.

Austin’s goal tally in 2014/15 is an impressive one given that it was the Loftus Road star’s debut season in the top tier and also given QPR failed to avoid the drop.

Newly appointed Magpies boss Steve McClaren would do well to bring in Austin to beef up his misfiring attack and the Daily Express claim the St James’ Park side are leading the race to bring in the England hopeful.

A move to Chelsea may appear tempting but Austin will be aware that first team action at Stamford Bridge would be a tough ambition to secure, with the likes of Diego Costa and Loic Remy currently providing Jose Mourinho’s striking options, and therefore a move to Newcastle United could be a more beneficial path to take in terms of the 25 year old’s career progression.

The Daily Express claim QPR want £15m for Austin, a fairly hefty fee for a player who has just a year to run on his current contract.
