The Hornets secured a return to the English top flight and have already started their summer spending as news boss Quique Flores looks to improve his chances of keeping the Hertfordshire outfit in the Premier League.

Watford are set to spend a club-record £7 million to sign Genoa winger Diego Perotti [Independent] and may have a mountain to climb trying to persuade Paulinho to leave Spurs to join their cause this summer.

Tottenham paid £17 million to bring the Brazil international in from Corinthians two years ago, and although his debut campaign was a fairly promising one, he found himself out of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team plans last term.

Paulinho made just three Premier League starts in 2014/15 and must be concerned about his White Hart Lane future, but this may not lead him to join Watford, who could well struggle to retain their top-tier status. The midfielder was the subject of interest from Juventus and AC Milan as recently as January [Daily Mail], and may well prefer to hold out for a move to one of the Italian giants, rather than remain in the Premier League.

Watford have also registered their interest in two other Spurs players, Benjamin Stambouli and defender Younes Kaboul, with the club’s owners keen to add more EPL experience to their squad.
