Argentina advanced to the final eight of the South American showpiece following an unbeaten showing in Group B.
Gerardo Martino’s side progressed after accruing seven points, but they hardly set the world alight following tight victories over Uruguay and Jamaica, and a draw with Paraguay.
However, with magnificent offensive options such as Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria and, of course, the aforementioned Messi, there is a sense that Argentina may be growing into the tournament.
They will be taking nothing for granted against a Colombia side who can call upon their own multi-talented array of forward talents.
The likes of Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado are players with points to prove, while Jackson Martinez—who has only played a peripheral role in the tournament so far—is also a player capable of stealing the show. Los Cafeteros have beaten Brazil already so far this summer, and are unlikely to be fazed by a meeting with Argentina.
For Messi, however, the game means perhaps as much as anyone.
While the Barcelona superstar has won all there is to win at club level, but his international trophy cabinet is fairly barren. While he came close to World Cup glory with Argentina last summer, the forward has nothing to show for his national-team career since an Olympic gold and a youth World Cup.
