The former Manchester United and England defender revealed via his official Twitter account on Friday morning that he and Carragher made a bet over how many goals Tottenham midfielder Paulinho would score during his time in English football.

Carragher must have been clearly impressed with the Brazilian before he joined Spurs in the summer of 2013 after tipping him to score 15 goals.

That target has not come close to being achieved as Paulinho has only managed to muster six league goals for Spurs and with his departure from White Hart Lane this summer looking increasingly likely, with Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande closing in on a deal [via Sky Sports].

The situation has left Carragher looking rather embarrassed.

Despite seeing off the attentions of various European giants to recruit the Selecao star [BBC], Tottenham have not seen the best of Paulinho during his two years in England. The midfielder-now 26-managed six goals and two assists in 30 appearances last term, but his role in the side has deteriorated greatly under Mauricio Pochettino. This term, the Brazilian has managed only one assist in 15 EPL outings, having made only three starts.

Under the terms of the bet, former Liverpool defender Carragher will now have to wear a Manchester United shirt, with Neville’s name on the back, at some point in the future.
