Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has slammed his old club for their failure to sign a top class striker this summer, and believes they should have pipped Chelsea to Radamel Falcao’s signature.

The Colombian international spent last season on loan at Manchester United, and despite scoring only four goals in a disappointing season, Lawrenson feels he would have been worth a gamble.

“I’d have gone for Falcao — £7m on a loan? I would have taken him,” Lawro is quoted in The Sun.

“Jose Mourinho is pulling off a masterstroke. He played with Diego Costa at Atletico Madrid so I think it’s a bonus, I really do.

“Liverpool need a top-class striker to add to what they’ve got.

“Danny Ings needs to play with someone And Daniel Sturridge might not be fit until November, so they definitely need a striker.”

Falcao now looks to have completed a move to Chelsea, pending an official confirmation, and will spend the 2015/16 season at Stamford Bridge.
