The Old Trafford No.1’s proposed move to Los Blancos was the feature article on the front page of Marca this Sunday, as the Spainsh newspaper ran with the headline: ‘Siempre Negativo’ – ‘Always Negative’.

Marca suggest that the former Netherlands manager is so far standing in the way of the goalkeeper’s return to Madrid, which could be as a result of continued quarrels over an agreeable transfer fee. Real opened the bidding at £13m – a figure said to be far inferior of the Dutchman’s valuation – and The Express claimed on Saturday that the Premier League giants are demanding £35m for his signature.

Nonetheless, what with reports that De Gea has put his Cheshire home up for sale [Mirror], along with having been rumoured to have told his team-mates that he will be moving to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer [Daily Mail], it is difficult to envisage the 24-year-old in a Manchester United shirt next season.

If the Red Devils refuse to budge on their valuation of £35m, however – despite the player only having one-year remaining on his current contract – De Gea could be forced to wait until his contract expires in the summer of 2016 to seek a return to his home country.

De Gea first made a name for himself in La Liga with Atletico Madrid before earning his big move to United for the 2011/12 season, replacing the legendary Edwin van der Sar. Having established himself in the Premier League, it may now be that he would prefer to play once again in the Spanish top flight. Coincidentally, he could also replace another club legend in doing so, with Real surely in need of a replacement for the ageing Iker Casillas for the number one role at the Bernabeu.
