Stunning reports from Spain last Sunday emerged of the Real vice-captain having become unsettled in Madrid [AS], with claims in the following days stating that not only are negotiations underway with the Red Devils [The Independent], but the player himself is eager for a transfer having informed the club of his desire to leave, according to another report in AS.

Nonetheless, Ramos’ future is far from being decided, and Marca suggest that Los Blancos may have a secret weapon in their new manager. The Spanish newspaper cite the former Liverpool boss’ influence on Steven Gerrard’s Anfield future amid a summer of interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2005.

Benitez is yet to have held talks with Ramos over his future with the La Liga BBVA giants, but the Spaniard isn’t likely to grant the defender an exit with ease, as the 29-year-old remains a vital player on the field and in the dressing room, according to Marca.

In July 2005, Benitez faced a similar situation at his old club Liverpool, as BBC Sport reported that Gerrard wanted to turn his back on Merseyside after Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho appeared to have persuaded the ex-England captain to make the move to Stamford Bridge. Still, Benitez succeeded in keeping hold of his star player and captain, who ended up seeing out the vast majority of his career with the club before finally leaving for LA Galaxy this summer.

It seems that the 55-year-old could be set for a similar intervention with Ramos this summer.
