The Red Devils announced the news via their official Twitter account on Monday evening as they have tied down the England international until 2019.

Jones follows in the footsteps of teammate Chris Smalling, who penned a new deal towards the end of last season and the pair will be hoping to forge a successful partnership at the heart of the United defence for many years to come.

The 23-year-old signed for the club from Blackburn Rovers in a reported deal up to £17million [via BBC Sport], but despite huge praise from former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 [via SkySports], he has failed to establish himself in his favoured central defensive role.

Jones has been used in a variety of roles for both club and country, however, he did make 22 appearances at centre-back under current boss Louis van Gaal last season.

The defender will have many more chances to prove he is the long-term solution to a position that United have struggled with since the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic last summer and Jones took to social media to reveal his delight at agreeing a new deal at Old Trafford.
