Louis van Gaal appears to be preparing for life without his current No.1 next season – who looks set to move to Real Madrid this summer – and the latest goalkeeper mooted as a potential successor to the 24-year-old is Muslera.

According to the Express, the Red Devils are willing to offer Antonio Valencia in a straight swap deal for the 29-year-old – who has been key for club and country over the past few campaigns.

Former Galatasaray midfielder Tomas Ujfalusi believes that Muslera could be the Premier League giants first-choice replacement for De Gea, and has backed the Uruguayan for the Old Trafford role.

“I believe Manchester United are also interested in signing him [Muslera]. If De Gea joins Real Madrid then Muslera could be their first choice,” as quoted by the Express.

“In my opinion he will be very successful at Manchester United.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris, Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic and Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen have also been rumoured to be on Manchester United’s goalkeeping wish list [via the Mirror].

Nonetheless, De Gea’s rumoured transfer to Real Madrid looks some way off completion, with The Times revealing that – despite the Spanish stopper’s apparent desperation to make the move to the Santiago Bernabeu before the Red Devils return for pre-season on Monday – negotiations have hit an impasse.

The two parties are struggling to agree a fee, while van Gaal’s interest in Sergio Ramos has complicated matters significantly, the newspaper state.
