Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy this summer and are willing to offer a player in return to the Toffees to help the move happen, according to the Daily Mail.

The Republic of Ireland international has really impressed in the Premier League in recent times, following on from his fine form at previous club Wigan Athletic to continue to shine under manager Roberto Martinez upon their move to Goodison Park in 2013.

With good defensive work and a fine range of passing, McCarthy is a great all-rounder in the middle of the park and one who could certainly add quality to any of the top Premier League sides, with the Daily Mail also reporting earlier this year that Arsenal and Manchester United were monitoring his situation.

It now seems that Tottenham are the main club stepping up their interest in the 24-year-old, and the Mail states that Aaron Lennon or Younes Kaboul could be afford to the Merseyside club as bait, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino also perhaps keen to offload some unwanted first-team players in this summer’s transfer window.

Tottenham finished fifth in the league last season, but will want to make the necessary signings to lift them into the top four for 2015/16, and the addition of a player like McCarthy could be a big boost, with players like Etienne Capoue, Paulinho and Moussa Dembele not particularly impressive in midfield last season.

Indeed, Paulinho has already left White Hart Lane this summer, so it could be that Pochettino is looking at McCarthy as his replacement in that area, while the Mail mentions that the north London outfit have also been looking at signing Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin for that position as well.
