Host nation Chile will go in search of their first ever Copa America title when they take on favourites Argentina on Saturday night.
The Chileans, runners up in 1955, 1956, 1979 and 1987, are appearing in their final in 28 years but having overcome the challenges of Mexico, Ecuador Bolivia, Uruguay and Peru they will fancy their chances against Argentina.
Their weekend opponents have pedigree though not to mention Lionel Messi.
The 15 times winners of the tournament in all variations of the competitions are chasing a first Copa title since 1993 but with their talisman in such fine form they will be confident.
Messi was at his creative best in the 6-1 win over Paraguay in the semi-finals setting up three goals.
Argentina v Chile KO 21.00 GMT
In addition to Messi, Argentina boast an array of attacking talent with Sergio Aguero, the tournaments 2nd top scorer with 3 goals, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel di Maria and Carlos Tevez all contributing to their run to the final.
Argentina have scored 10 goals so far, conceding 3, some three less than what Chile have managed to date in the competition.
Messi, along with his weekend opponents Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sanchez have been the stand out players in the tournament, however after finishing last year’s World cup as the best player but with a runners-up medal to show for it, the Barcelona man is key to go one better.
“This generation is desperate to win a title with the national team,” Messi said.
“As a team, we deserve to win something and it would mean so much after the World Cup where we came so close.”
Should they win, Argentina will join Uruguay as the most successful side in the tournament’s history with a 14th Copa America title and they will fancy their chances especially as they have lost to Chile in 24 Copa America games.
Neither team has any major injury worries or suspensions ahead of the final although Argentina have a slight concern over Ezequiel Garay
