The 29-year-old shed some light on his current situation, claiming, “I am not negotiating with anyone,” when asked how are the negotiations going. This could be construed as the Spain international quashing rumours that he is going to Old Trafford, although he did refuse to answer when asked if he was going to stay at the Bernabeu.

When saying that he isn’t in any negotiations it could also mean that he isn’t in contract talks with Los Blancos, which is believed to be at the heart of the problems between him and club president Florentino Perez. This leaves the Red Devils with some hope that they can entice the centre-back away from the team he has played for during the last decade.

With an error prone back line one of manager Louis van Gaal’s main problems last season getting the defender on board could be vital to competing on all four fronts next time round.
