Chelsea & Tottenham set to lose out on defender after Premier League rivals threaten legal action

The 30-year-old was let go by the Merseyside outfit after his contract ran out at the end of last season. In recent seasons he has seen his form drop, and even saw midfielder Jordan Henderson play ahead of him at right-back in the latter stages of the last campaign.

The defender played 28 times last time round, but most of these appearances came in the first half of the season. This was before he picked up injuries and lost form. However, the Hammers are still interested in the full-back as manager Slaven Bilic looks to deal with the Europa League in his debut campaign.

With 54 caps for England, Johnson does have the ability to play at the highest level. He could be the perfect replacement for Carl Jenkinson at Upton Park, who was on loan at the club from Arsenal last season but isn’t guaranteed to come back again. Being a product of the East London side’s academy, it could be a welcome homecoming for the free agent.
