It had been expected that the England international would sign a new deal at the Emirates Stadium before being sent out on loan, and Sunderland have already had an offer to take the player temporarily accepted. However, they could well lose him permanently now.

The 23-year-old impressed while on loan at Upton Park last season, and the Hammers are keen to keep him permanently as a result. He played 36 times for the East London side last time round, helping them to a great start before the team tailed off in the latter stages of the campaign. Alongside Aaron Cresswell the right-back was one of their top performers.

The Gunners may not be too worried if Jenkinson leaves, as they currently have several options in his position. Mathieu Debuchy was signed last summer and despite several injuries is still a top player, while Hector Bellerin developed in to a fine prospect last season. Arsene Wenger doesn’t really Jenkinson as long as the pair stay fit and in form.
