Arsenal’s bid to sign Mario Gotze from Bayern Munich this summer could set them back a whopping £49.6m, eclisping what they paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil back in 2013.

The Gunners are rivalling Manchester United for the unsettled German playmaker, who has not been at his best since moving to the Allianz Arena from rivals Borussia Dortmund two years ago.

Arsenal were also linked with him during his time at Dortmund, where he drew comparisons with a young Lionel Messi, and they could now make the 23-year-old their latest big-money buy after exciting deals for players like Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech in recent times.

Gotze won’t come cheap, according to the Metro, but would make an ideal replacement for Santi Cazorla, who has been linked with Atletico Madrid.
